Kate Gibbs – Some Folks’ Art: Work by Self-Taught Artists
November’s art history lecture by Kate Gibbs explores work by self-taught artists. This presentation will include better-known artists such as Faith Ringgold, Martín Ramírez, Guo Fengyi, and Henry Darger, as well as lesser-known artists like quilter Theresa Zett Smith and anonymous makers from 19th century colonial America. We will consider implications of various labels (Outsider, Raw, Naïve, Intuitive, Folk) and the development of related artistic styles, mainstream and otherwise, and their influence. Join us to delve into the lives and work of self-taught artists from the U.S. and abroad.
